That community is the oral microbiome, one of the most densely populated microbial sites in the whole body. Most of its residents are harmless or actively helpful, forming a stable population that crowds out troublemakers and does part of the ordinary work of a healthy mouth.

When balance tips

Trouble starts when the community shifts. Some bacteria produce acid as they feed, and when those species gain the upper hand, the acid erodes enamel and starts cavities. Other shifts track with gum inflammation. A familiar set of conditions tips the balance:
