Mastic gum is the hardened resin of the Mediterranean mastic tree, chewed for thousands of years and now sold on a long list of health claims. Some of those claims hold up well. Others rest on tradition or small early studies that get treated as settled fact. The benefits that are on solid ground
A few of mastic’s benefits are purely mechanical, so they hold up regardless of what the research eventually says:
- A sugar-free chew. Unlike sugary gum, mastic won’t feed the bacteria linked to tooth decay, which makes it a sensible swap.
- More saliva. Chewing anything boosts saliva flow, and saliva neutralizes acids and helps protect enamel. That effect is well established for chewing in general.
- Fresh breath. Its clean, resinous taste is why people have reached for it as a breath freshener for centuries.
- A real jaw workout. Mastic is firm and takes sustained effort to chew, which is why it’s a favorite with the jawline and “hard gum” crowd. None of these benefits are controversial, and all of them are low-risk.
What the human trials actually show
Past the mechanical benefits, mastic is better studied than most things in the wellness aisle, and the honest summary is “real but modest” rather than “unproven.”
Digestive comfort has the strongest evidence. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial found mastic eased functional dyspepsia (indigestion-type symptoms) in far more people than placebo, 77% versus 40%.[1] That’s a proper trial with a control arm, and it’s the single best reason to take mastic’s gut reputation seriously.
H. pylori is more interesting than the skeptical version admits. Mastic killed the bacterium in the lab in 1998.[4] An early human trial using crude resin then found nothing, which looked damning until later work showed the crude resin contains an insoluble polymer that blunts its activity; remove that polymer and purified mastic works.[3] In a controlled pilot, mastic on its own cleared H. pylori in about a third of the people who took it.[2] That is well below what antibiotics achieve and it is a small study, but a third of patients clearing an infection on a resin alone is a real signal, not noise.
Where the evidence is still thin
- Inflammatory bowel disease. The research is early, and a systematic review concluded the evidence remains limited.[5] Interesting, not established.
- Oral bacteria, beyond the plain sugar-free and saliva benefits above. The traditional use is ancient and the lab work is suggestive, but the human trials aren’t there yet.
“Not yet proven” is not the same as “debunked,” and it isn’t the same as “proven” either. Both mistakes are common with mastic, usually made by people selling something.

The everyday, mechanical benefits are real and low-risk. Digestive comfort has a genuine placebo-controlled trial behind it. Everything past that is promising and unfinished, so hold it loosely until better trials arrive.
